Presentation at De Geuzen Art Space, Amsterdam

“From Kindergarten to Total Carnage” was a presentation by artist Matthew Shadbolt . The name refers directly to the level of skill a player chooses when playing particular computer games. The simple and most basic level is ‘kindergarten’ and the most difficult is and usually results in ‘total carnage’.

With a large beam projection from the computer, Shadbolt guided the audience through some of the earliest computer games discussing the challenges of “Pong” where minimalist vertical lines engage in a bout of tennis in the black void. And from this very rudimentary stage in game development he moved to the more recent and sophisticated “Deep Blue” project, a computerised simulated chess partner that continues to challenge the greatest chess champions today. While laying out this history of gaming, he referred to classic representations of artificial intelligence in films such as the benign “R2D2” in “Star Wars” and the feminine mechanical body in “Metropolis”. He illustrated the dystopic image of technology by looking at “HAL/9000”, the rebellious computer in Stanley Kubrick’s “2001- A Space Odyssey” which rages out of control turning against its creator, man. For Shadbolt, these cinematic archetypes reveal our hopeful expectations as well as our anxieties with regards to the development of computer technology.

Dusting off two from the archives - Hoffman (an indie band based in Somerset, England) demo tape covers from mid 1995. You can see this in the context of other Somerset-based indie over at the Head Club MySpace page. Algorithm is currently working on the album design for the long overdue debut album from The Tony Head Experience.

"The best moments in reading, are when you come across something, a thought, a feeling, a way of looking at things, that you'd thought special, particular to you. And here it is, set down by someone else, a person you've never met. Maybe even someone long dead. And it's as if a hand... has come out and taken yours." (The History Boys, Drummer Hodge Scene)

From 'A Historian's Craft', some wonderful words of inspiration :

And the work is: Only Collect; that is to say, collect everything, indiscriminately. You’re five years old. Don’t presume too much to know what’s important and what isn’t. Photocopy journal articles, photograph archives; create bibliographies, buy books; make notes on every article or book you read, even if it’s just one line saying “Never read this again”; collect newspaper clippings and email them to yourself; collect quotes; save your ideas for future papers, future projects, future conferences, even if they seem wildly implausible now. Hoarding must become instinctual, it must be an uncontrollable, primal urge. And the higher, civilizing impulse that kicks in after the fact is organization, or librarianship. You must keep tabs on everything you collect, somehow; a system must be had, and the system must be idiot-proof. That is to say, you should be able to look back on it six months for now and not be completely stymied as to why you’ve organized things that way. (The present versions of ourselves are invariably the biggest idiots, and six months will make that clear).

What this all takes is patience — more patience, sometimes, than I am good at. I am impatient to know things, and impatient for things to make sense more quickly; and the discipline (ah, that apt term) just doesn’t work that way. A colleague of mine told me that he’s been Only Collecting for over ten years, and can now knock out a 3000 word paper in under two days, simply because all his material is already at hand; it exists in the stuff he’s picked up in his intellectual infancy and adolescence, which at the time he didn’t know how to use, and perhaps didn’t even know was important.

Here, there’s one more point I could make: time fine-tunes your collecting habits. You are a predator of sources. Over time, things will start to jump out at you. For a lionness in the savannah on the hunt, the merest movement in the grass is a stimulus to action, but she has learned to distinguish between the random twitches of the landscape and the presence of prey. In the library and the archive, the hunt is as much a matter of skill as of instinct. In short, until you’re an adult lion, jump at everything — even if it turns out just to be a falling leaf, or a totally bizarre interview between George Bernard Shaw and a Saudi Muslim mystic in Mombasa in 1936, which I discovered amidst some otherwise entirely unremarkable magazine articles on the nature of Islam in Southeast Asia.

Luc Tuyman's 'social experiment' in Antwerp - a very interesting short film (featuring some nice use of Sigur Ros). No great surprises here, other than the wildly unrealistic expectations of the curators, collectors and galleristas. Of everything in the film I enjoyed the Klara logo at the end the best.

What CD would we find in your CD player at home or in your car right now?
It's usually a revolving mixture of things, but here's a list of albums which I've been playing a lot recently: Film School: "Hideout"; Interpol: "Our Love To Admire"; July Fourth: "Curtain Of Stars" EP; Editors: "An End Has A Start"; Stereolab: "ABC Music"; Radiohead: "Amnesiac"; and Joy Division: "Unknown Pleasures."

What genre of music do you prefer?
It varies, but in general I like indie music. This sometimes gets classified as "alternative', but it's a bit more specific than that. My parents always loved Motown, so I'm a sucker for a great pop tune as well.

What genre do you avoid?
Cover bands - this just seems so lazy to me.

Favorite artist of all time:
New Order

What was the name of the last CD you purchased?
"Tommy" by The Wedding Present.

First record:
"The Evil That Men Do" by Iron Maiden.

First CD:
"Brassneck" by The Wedding Present

Do you prefer records or CDs?
As a designer, I always preferred records over CDs. There was something really great about the size and format of records which appealed to me visually, especially where they had been more creative with what happened inside.

Do you download your music or buy it in the store?
I miss the experience of going to the store, but it's just easier these days to download it. I've always been an Apple user, so making the transition to the iPod and iTunes was very natural.

What do you think of the music that's being released today?
I think there's a lot of mainstream garbage out there, the worst of which I think is the "alternative" mainstream, but I think there's always great music being released, you just have to know where to go and find it.

This week seems to have been Britpop week at Algorithm. Here's some favorites from the mid-nineties. That Gene video was filmed where I went to University in Kingston - nice memories of the complete soulessness of the 'shopping center', and the insanity of the Surrey meatheads who lived there. The nightclub featured in the video is where I worked part-time during my student days (I tore tickets at the movies there).

I had first heard Sleeper's 'Delicious' at an indie night at the Marquee (RIP), and had been trying to hunt it down forever before finally getting the CD, upon which I went mental dancing around my bedsit to it for hours.

3 X 3: My Favorite Documentaries

Algorithm recently worked on the documentary 3:15. As part of the discussions surrounding the post production of the film, I got thinking about which documentaries I had really enjoyed, especially when I saw them at the theater. Top of the Christmas list this year - 'In The Realms Of The Unreal', the story of Henry Darger and his incredible secret creative life, only discovered after this death.

The best one to watch on a rainy Friday night? 'American Movie' - classic documentary making at it's finest, the story of the making of an independent horror movie.
